Jersey’s lungs are its waters.
We live on a small island with lots of people. Our options on creating spaces here to sequester (absorb) carbon are limited. However we have a huge underwater realm surrounding the island that if we protect can offer blue carbon alternatives.
Sea grasses, intertidal algal beds and maerl beds are all effective carbon sinks. They all exist around the island and the associated reefs and if given opportunity will thrive and provide blue carbon options for the island.
We are lucky.
Jersey has a huge amount of marine ecosystems that if cared for correctly can help us combat climate change and provide something for future generations to be proud of.
